Equipo Navazos was founded by Jesús Barquín, a professor of criminology and Eduardo Ojeda, the technical director of Groupo Estevez, the company that owns sherry icon Valdespino.
It was a discovery of some very beautiful Amontillado in an obscure cellar that provoked the thought. Why don’t we bottle these barrels separately? They were too good to blend, but with not enough volume to be commercially viable. Thus was born Equipo Navazos – The raiders of the lost sherries. They have been clear the project was not about money, it is the passion for the greatness of sherry that drives this project. It is their belief that sherry is one of the greatest wines in the world, and these wines intend to prove it beyond a doubt.
Equipo Navazos sources its wines from different bodegas around the Jerez area. Because of the links they have – Valdespino and La Guita, as well as Rey Fernando de Castilla, Sánchez Ayala and Pérez Barquero are all favoured sources. All barrels are selected for their quality and distinctive character, and they are bottled unfiltered (or rather with the lightest filtering possible), saving as much of the complexity and full body as possible. They are En-Rama wines before they were popular.
Each release is strictly limited, and once it’s gone it’s gone – there is no continuity of supply, hence the numbered releases. Given the tiny quantities and an average age of about 30 years old, these are one of the best value wines available on the market right now.
“Their cult following keeps growing throughout the world, and rightly so, as their name on a label is a guarantee of quality.” Luiz Guttierez
“The wines by Equipo Navazos are a cultural contribution of the highest importance.” Juancho Asenjo, El mundo Vino
“Equipo Navazos make mindblowing Sherries. I’m drinking one at the moment, and it’s a life-enhancing experience.” Jamie Goode
“They are not cheap. But then nor is Grand Cru burgundy.” Jancis Robinson, Sherry as Montrachet – Revelations
